Children’s Zoo Day
Communities for Children Playford
2017 Read Aloud at the Zoo Day
Sunday 7 May
Every year United Way SA provides an enjoyable day of fun at the Adelaide Zoo for 1,000 children and their families who experience significant life challenges, where they can enjoy time together free of their usual daily worries.
Great weather and a fun day at the fabulous Adelaide Zoo is expected this Sunday 7 May to celebrate the 11th anniversary of the event.
Last year we launched our Read Aloud Every Child Every Day campaign with our Read Aloud Ambassador, Mem Fox, Minister for Education, Hon. Susan Close and 891 radio personality Peter Goers, our MC for the day, (seen with Percy & Penny possum). This year Mem will join us again and read her children’s classic ‘Possum Magic’ and her new book, ‘I’m Australian Too‘ at the Zoo Day. In addition, we will have other South Australian authors Katrina Germein, Kathy Parker and Tania Ingram who will be on the reading trail, which you will find in the fairy garden, the children’s zoo and on the hill (near the playground). At each station you will be able to enjoy the story reading and undertake the craft activities.
So many of the life’s opportunities: an education, a fulfilling job, a role in our community, all depend on our ability to read. By linking our Children’s Zoo Day to our early childhood literacy community impact program United We Read, and now through our Read Aloud campaign we are able to share the importance of reading aloud to children with our client families as well as the general public to better prepare children to start school ready to Read learn and Succeed. At United Way SA we aim to build children’s potential and we see Reading Aloud to Every Child Every Day as a great start to every child’s life.
What families said after last year’s Zoo Day…
We had a brilliant day! Wyatt is 8 years old and Declan is 10 years old. Both have Autism. Thank you so very much we rarely get out to events, so to be able to attend something like this where people won’t stare or pass judgement was fantastic! Thanks again, Amanda
