AnglicareSA Communities for Children Playford Zoo Day 2018
Every year, United Way SA provides an enjoyable day of fun at the Adelaide Zoo for children and their families who have experienced significant life changes. It is a day where they can enjoy time together, free of their usual daily worries. This year was the 12th Annual Zoo Day, at which around 800 people braved the overcast conditions and the intermittent rain showers to attend the family Read Aloud Zoo Day event.
“Kelly liked the animals best”, said single mother of three who had never been to the zoo before.
This year, 2018, Mem Fox, United Way SA’s Ambassador and international children’s author, along with other special guests, including authors, Chris Owen and Tania Ingram, alongside Mrs Le (Governor’s wife), read aloud to the families on the central lawn of the Adelaide Zoo. Many described this experience to be the highlight of the day!
“I loved the book, ‘I’m Australian Too’, by Mem Fox, as it related to my family coming from Vietnam. This is a really good book for young children as it teaches them that everyone is different and exposes them (to different cultures) from a young age.’ – Chan.
Every family received a Family Bag filled with goodies, including the book Pandamonia written by author Chris Owen. More fun was has as families also enjoyed the craft reading activities, papermaking and glitter tattoos.
“I enjoyed making an armoured dog at the egg decorating in the fairy garden.” – Michael.
“We loved the books and involving kids in so many activities.” – Donna.
“The day was fun with the different activities. The kids enjoyed everything!” – Roma.
Children were dazzled by the suspense of Mickster the Trickster’s magical tricks as well as families were entertained by the magical performances and help from the children.
Despite the challenge of the biggest downpour of the day, representatives from the Australian Army served a picnic style lunch to families.
We really enjoyed the healthy lunch and that there were options with no meat. – Kai.
So many of life’s opportunities such as, education, fulfilling jobs, and roles in our communities, all depends on our ability to read. By linking our Children’s Zoo Day to our Early Childhood Literacy Community Impact Program, United We Read and our Read Aloud Campaign, we are able to share the importance of reading aloud to children with our client families, as well as the public. This allows for better preparation for children to start school and ready to Read, Learn and Succeed. At United Way SA, we aim to build children’s potential and we see Reading Aloud to Every Child Every Day as a great start to every child’s life.
United Way SA gives special thanks to our volunteers and partners who helped made the day possible. In particularly, we would like to thank our main partner, AnglicareSA Communities for Children Playford. We would also like to thank our supporting partners.
